“Working with Maria was such a professional and lovely experience! She made sure that she knew the atmosphere she would be shooting in before hand, and came prepared! Enter four crazy children! She was so calm and patient with all of us, and captured magical shots of our family that I will cherish forever. We could not be more happy with our photos.”

“There is something special about Maria West. She puts you at ease, making a photo shoot feel like a typical day at the park. Her work does more than reflect a moment. She has a unique ability able to capture personality and emotion and context. We treasure our family photographs and look forward to someday looking back and watching our children grow, through Maria’s work, all over again.”

I grew up in Kalamazoo, Michigan. I am half Mexican and half Dutch. As a child I was an artist and an equestrian. I started riding when I was 7. Horses and art consumed my life and I loved every moment of it.

When I was 17, I met a horse photographer while I was competing with my horse at a show. He offered me a job, and that is how I began down the road in photography. Horses + Photography? How could it get any better?

I went to Kendall College of Art & Design in Grand Rapids, MI from 2001-2005. It was there that I met my husband, Taylor. He was a furniture design major which was incredibly fascinating to me. I graduated with a BFA specializing in Painting. Being a part of and immersed within a creative community and learning new mediums gave me vision. My husband and I joke often that we wish we could go back to college.

After graduation, Taylor moved home to High Point, NC to begin working in the family business as a furniture designer. I moved to NC a few months later, and began working as an illustrator for a furniture designer. I enjoyed all of the details of the design world and learning a new avenue for my creativity. I kept love for photography alive by always taking my camera on our adventures, and eventually started taking photographs for families and weddings. My little side hustle grew, even though my full time was dedicated to being an illustrator and designer. I enjoyed meeting new families and lovebirds and documenting their stories. I eventually left my full-time job as an illustrator and began working freelance. This gave me the freedom to pursue photography even more and also gave me even more creative freedom. This was a big jump for me, but I worked hard to build up a client base and continued doing what I love.

We were married in 2011. It was also in 2011 that I officially began my business as Zozo Photography. “Zozo” came as an homage to my very sweet first rescue dog. She was a treasure to me and we loved one another so much. I sadly lost her in 2010. It was so hard losing Zoey and I still think of her often – my Zozo.

I began riding again in 2011 and began competing in the Hunter Jumper world. It was a thrill and I realized how much I had missed this big part of my heart! My Dad always joked with my husband that once were married, my horse habit was my husbands problem now!

We had our firstborn, Ryder Holden in June 2015. In 2016, I left my freelance work as an illustrator and pursued photography solely. It was important for me to still be able to spend time with my little one while I pursued my passion, and I worked to find a balance while my business grew.

In February 2018 the High Point Discovered team was formed and I was honored to become a part of it. It felt like so many of my passions were coming together in such a unique way. Combining my love for community with my passion for storytelling through beautiful imagery was and continues to be an honor.

We had our second son in August 2018. River Willem has made our lives crazy, fun and wild and we wouldn’t have it any other way. My motto these days is “embrace the chaos”!
